Structure and Traits of English Language

by Mae Gladys Merquita

English has more words than most languages, and those words have come from numerous sources from all over the world. As a result, English is rich in words that vary slightly in meaning or that have differing connotations.

English is the third most popular world language, as measures by the number of native speakers. It is also the most popular non – native acquired language in the world.

Deepening its content, we can study the structure of language in a variety of ways. For example, we can study classes of words, meaning of words, how words are acquired in relation to each other and in larger constructions, how words are formed from smaller meaningful units, the sounds of words, and how they form patterns of knowledge in the speaker’s mind and how standardized written forms represent words.

There were some sub – contents under its structure, this are phonetics, morphology and etc. All words are, at their most basic, collection of different sounds. Phonetics is the branch of linguistics that deals with the sounds of speech and their production, combination and description, and representation by written symbols. Morphology, is the other way around, it is the study of the structure and form of words in language or a language including derivation, inflection and the formation of compounds. At the base level, words are made of “morphemes”. Furthermore, many of the words in English are derived from Latin and Greek morphemes. In many cases words taken from Latin or Greek retain the inflectional traits and gender from the original languages. There are many sub – contents under these but let me just cite the minority and most essential of it.

Because of the history and steep number of people who use English, there are many different varieties of English. A variety can be thought of as a typical kind of English or more technically, a precise linguistic system shared by a particular pool of users. There are no shape dividing lines between varieties, since people typically master more than one variety. Nevertheless, varieties can be described in the terms of the group who most uses a particular variety and the linguistic variety of that variety.

Its structure and traits really evolve this world nowadays. If we are keen observers, most of the people really admire and attain, articulate and apply, exhaust the language as much as they want. Really, it is very agreeable, for no matter how far we travel around the globe, we are able to converse and communicate to our fellowmen and other races. We could then locate jobs and if granted by bliss, we can also compete and study to other countries and to every curve of this globe.
