We have heard questions about the K + 12 Education Program. If K + 12 will be implemented this year, will the students learn better? Is it more practical to study for two more years? The Dep Ed claimed that with the additional two years, students will have more time to master the essential competencies and skills, with the objective of achieving high academic standards especially in mathematics, science and English. “K +12 is true to the form of a government flexing its muscles to better fit the challenges of the ever changing of the world”.” In the process of change, growing pains may arise, but everyone wins in the end. “K + 12 Education Program has its advantages and disadvantages to Filipino learners.

The K + 12 Education Program contributes a greater impact to the skills of the students. In the elementary grades it helps to improve their reading and writing skills, ability to comprehend and compute. The two years of senior high school intend to provide time for students to consolidate acquired academic skills and competencies. “The curriculum will allow specializations in science and technology, music and arts, agriculture and fisheries, sports, business and entrepreneurship.” Graduates of enhanced K + 12 Education Program will acquire mastery of basic competencies and be more emotionally mature.

First, the K + 12 Education Program has its advantages. Graduates are perceived to possess competencies relevant to the job market. They are expected to develop more skills and become more competitive enough because of the two years education being added. Second, graduates will be prepared for higher education because due to the enhanced curriculum that will provide relevant content and attuned with the changing needs of times, basic education will ensure sufficient mastery of core subjects to its graduates such that graduates may opt to pursue higher education if they choose to. Third, a better educated society provides a sound foundation for long- term socio-economic development because K + 12 Education Program will contribute to the development of emotionally and intellectually matures individuals. They are now capable of pursuing productive employment or entrepreneurship or higher education.

Second, K +12 Education Program has its disadvantages. First, parents have to sell out more money (for transportation and food) for the education of their children because it’s good only for those parents who have stable income to support the education of their children. For those parents who have no permanent work, it would be hard for them to send their children in school especially if they have many children. Second, every family dreams of having a child graduate from college. The parents want their children to find a job early, earn money of their own needs and help their family. Third, the drop out will increase because of the two extra years because some students will get bored with two –extra years and some parents also can’t afford to support them financially.

I believe that the K + 12 Education Program will be implemented this school year 2012- 2013. Education is very important to us and it has a big role to have a better life in the future. For me , the K + 12 Education Program will be implemented so that the students would be more literate, and competitive to be able to find jobs more easily and can contribute to the country’s pride as well as the country’s economy. We should think that it has a great value in our lives and we will take it on a positive way.
