What Makes An Effective Language Teacher?

By: Mae Gladys Merquita

Everyone can remember a good teacher they had, be it that kindergarten “princess” or math “master”. Our teachers are a gift to us. They do have inimitable characteristics and they are our role models and second parents.

Yes, we have good teachers, ideal teachers and real teachers, but we can’t say that all of them are effective teachers. What really makes an effective language teacher? Well, by that question, we first think that effective language teachers are those teachers who could really speak their native and target language. Furthermore, to deepen its meaning, effective teachers need to have a very strong ability to speak the target language as well as a solid understanding of the target language.

Language teachers do also have their goals. If their goal is to improve the student’s language proficiency, then they will be so sure that their students understand their goals. For example, students need to understand what proficiency is and what it means to communicate.

How can effective language teachers dominate proficiency to their students or learners? How can they set an example? Maybe the near answers to these questions are; first, teachers must show their learner the power of the languages and how to use the language effectively. Second, learners must know the language that their teacher teaches them; and they have to be role models by showing students their passion, expertise and mastery of the language.

Effective teaching means being passionate about learning, loving children, wanting to get them engaged, and communicating. Also, helping children to learn and afraid not of making mistakes, trying out the new language, and fostering tons of curiosity. Effective language teachers inspire lifelong learning and show students a bigger world through experiencing culture and people with language and communication. Thus, I believe that effective teachers empower students.

Each of our treasured teachers have diverse talents, be it in communication, honing minds of the learners and etc. We must be thankful that we are gifted by such magnificent teachers. All of us are grateful to have them – let’s inject and move over the sound views towards our teachers and neglect those unsound views.
