Beauty In World Englishes

By: Julie Amor T. Callanta

Should there be a global standard for all English speakers? Such question confronts many of the races in the world, especially those who sees English as their second probably third language. This makes many barriers which separates those who are not fluent enough to speak the Tongue of the World. For years, many sees it as a problem, others do not. What would be the remedy for this continual discrimination of races? Will there be ways in which non-native speakers will be confident enough to communicate?

Ever since, English is known to be as the best language which is an indication that people, must know what it is and how it is done. Good enough for those who were born with it and sad for those who find it an alien to their place. It is evident that the most places, particularly most continents which consists of millions of races has their own language which is why, when English sets in, another story begins. How will these people communicate effectively?

Researchers penetrated to the big confronting problem most of the people mocks about, on how third/second language speakers desperately fits in in order to be with the world. Then, World Englishes was studied. The issue of World Englishes was first raised in 1978 to examine concepts of regional Englishes globally. Pragmatic factors such as appropriateness, comprehensibility and interpretability justified the use of English as an international and intra-national language. This goes to show that anyone who can speak English, no matter how awkward and crooked your language skills are, as long as it is comprehensible and clear, then why would this study not be praised?

It is undeniable that people who aren’t fluent of the language finds it awkward for them to speak such. This mentality has been a great issue ever since which really is, unhealthy. World Languages is here, why waste time? Practice may not always bear instant answers for difficulties but it is always on the mindset that the barriers penetrate. Positive enough, this discovery is really a good thing; it only shows that everyone can be heard now. Conscious? Don’t be, hesitant? It won’t lead you to anything. The important thing here is you speak, you get to be understood, you are understood and everything is understood. Break away and let this discovery help those who are in need. Who knows what greater things this could lead to?
