Looking into the magnitude of English language in the global setting, Ramos-Consad talks about the ‘academic’ and ‘career challenges’ of English.

A faculty member of the Language and Letters Division, Ms. Rizza Ramos-Consad told an audience of about 500 students, Moday at the Bukidnon State University gymnasium, in celebration of the English week with its theme “Embracing the Challenges through English”.

She said, ‘for a student to be successful, he or she should know how to verbalize his or her own thoughts well’. There are ‘gazillions of words in Filipino and English’ that students can use in describing things.

In countries such as Thailand and China, many graduates from BSU worked as English teachers. Others are in call centers in the major cities in the Philippines. ‘Great majority of jobs require good command in English’, and graduates with competent English speaking skills have greater opportunities to be hired.

How do we improve our English Skills?’, Ramos-Consad asked. She mentioned few tips such as reading, learning a new word each day, watching movies and listening to dialogues, and the most important, speaking it. However, she said that students should ‘find other ways that will work best’ for them. The improvement of ‘one’s own language at a very personal level’ is everyone else’s responsibility.

Having good English will help me in creating application letters whenever I apply for jobs… as well as in interviews’, Christine Paluga, a second year BSBA student said after being asked about the importance of English language competence.
